Why a single ratio is rarely enough
A P/E of 25 sounds high in isolation — until you learn the sector average is 35. A debt-to-equity of 1.5 sounds risky — until you learn every close competitor runs between 1.2 and 1.8 because the business model itself requires that much capital. Almost every valuation, growth, and profitability metric only becomes meaningful in relative terms.
What to hold constant when comparing
Sector and industry matter most — comparing an IT services company's margins to a metals company's margins tells you little, since the underlying business economics are entirely different. Company size is a second useful filter: a large, mature company and a much smaller one in the same sector often carry structurally different growth rates and valuations, even doing fundamentally similar business.
What to actually look at across peers
A useful peer comparison lines up the same handful of metrics — current price, market cap, P/E, ROE, revenue growth, and an overall quality score — side by side across every company in the same sector, so relative standing is visible at a glance rather than requiring several separate lookups.
